Biodiversity Conservation Agencies

Agencies and organisations that are working on the crucial issues of biodiversity conservation projects worldwide.

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Founded in 1948, the IUCN is the world’s largest international conservation network with more than 1,000 member organizations in 140 countries.  It focuses on preservation of biodiversity, but also supports a wide range of environmental priorities. The IUCN also has Official Observer Status at the United Nations General Assembly.

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)

With over 1300 WWF conservation projects, it is one of the largest environmental organizations in the world and has been around since 1961.  It acts both international and locally, covering a wide variety of environmental issues but with a focus on preserving biodiversity.

Conservation International (CI)

Founded in 1987, CI is a global environmental and social organization with offices in over 30 countries.  It pursues a variety of conservation initiatives, with a focus on safeguarding biodiversity.

Natural Resources Defence Council

A US based environmental organization that supports a wide variety of national and global of environmental issues, including preservation of biodiversity. Founded in 1970, it currently has a staff of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts, and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists.

International Crane Foundation

An international conservation organization, founded in 1973, that is specifically dedicated specifically to the goal of saving and appreciating cranes and their habitats. It operates primarily in the US, but also has education, training, and conservation programs internationally.

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)

A UK-based bird conservation society, it acts primarily in the UK to manage nature reserves and conserve species. The RSPB website serves as a resource for learning more about birds and how to protect them. Founded in 1889, it now has over 1 million members and manages 200 nature reserves.
